MH-53 Pave Low Helicopter History: Sikorsky Aircraft manufactured the HH-53 “Super Jolly Green Giant”, which was the United States Air Force version of the CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopter that was used for long-range combat search and rescues operations. The HH-53’s later were updated as the MH-53 Pave Low series, which was retired in September of 2008. The United States Air Force ordered the HH-53 B and HH-53C as search and rescue units; however they later decided to develop the MH-53J Pave Low Helicopter to be used for Special Operations missions. The Pave Low series helicopters were used for low-level, long-range, undetected penetration into denied area, day or night in adverse weather. As with any aircraft manufactures feel they can always improve and even as good as the Pave Low was it still had room for improvement. The MH-53J Pave Low III is a heavy-lift helicopter that is the largest, most powerful, and technologically advanced transport helicopter in the U.S. Air Forces fleet. The MH-53J Pave Low Helicopter is 88 feet long and 25 feet tall with a rotor diameter of 72 feet. Her empty weight is 32,000 pounds and her max takeoff weight is 46,000 pounds.
