About the Gee-Bee R-2: Gee Bee stands for Granville Brothers. Granville Brothers Aircraft was an aircraft manufacturer in operation from 1929 until their bankruptcy in 1934. They were located at the Springfield Airport in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Gee Bee "R-2" model was designed and built specifically for the 1932 Races. As part of the Super Sportsters series models, it was known to be one of the fastest land planes in the world. The R-2 was built for the Bendix Trophy race, a cross country race, but it was thought that it would be a strong contender in pylon racing as well. The R-2 was powered by the very same Pratt & Whitney R985 that had powered the 1931 Model Z, rated at 535hp. The R985 engine had a diameter of 45-3/4" and a frontal area of 11.42 sq.ft. This allowed the R-2 to have a more streamlined cowling and come closer to the ideal teardrop shape. The R-2 had an empty weight of 1,796 lbs. and a gross weight of 3,883 lbs. With a wing area of 101.9 sq.ft, the wing loading was 38.1 lbs. per sq. ft. The power loading with 50 gallons of fuel on board was 4.47 lbs. per hp, but with full fuel, it was up to 7.32 lbs.
