Her first flight was on July 4, 1927 and could reach speeds of 120 miles per hour and top out at 135 miles per hour, which was very impressive during that time. She was later introduced to the world in 1928. There were a total of 132 Lockheed Vega’s built at the end of production, with her main role being a transport aircraft. The Vega’s biggest claim to fame was that Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly the Atlantic single handed in a Vega. She named her little red Vega “Little Red Bus”. The Vega’s other claim to fame is that Wiley Post flew his Vegas which he called “Winnie Mae” around the world twice. Both Amelia and Wiley’s Vega’s are at the National Air and Space Museum. There are four other Vega’s that are believed to still exist and at least one of them is still in flying condition. The Vegas was 27 feet 6 inches long and stood 8 feet 6 inches tall with a wingspan of 41 feet. Her empty weight was 2,565 pounds and her loaded weight was 4,500 pounds. Her max speed was 185 miles per hour and her cruise speed was 165 miles per hour and she had a range of 725 miles. References: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_Vega
