Amelia disappeared in a highly modified Electra during her attempt to fly around the world. The Electra was a twin engine, all metal monoplane that was designed by Hall Hibbard and developed by Lockheed in the 1930’s. She was first introduced in 1935 and a total of 149 were built. The Electra was the first all-metal airplane that was developed by Lockheed. Her prototype made her first flight on February 23, 1934. Dick Merrill and J.S. Lambie also made the Electra famous by accomplishing a round trip crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. Their feat was declared the first round-trip commercial crossing of the ocean. The Electra was also pressed into military service during World War II. The Electra was 38 feet 7 inches long and stood 10 feet 1 inch tall with a wingspan of 55 feet. Her empty weight was 6,454 pounds and her loaded weight was 10,500 pounds. Her max speed was 202 miles per hour and her range was 713 miles.
