On November 5, of that same year the Supersonic Transport Aircraft Committee (STAC) was formed. They assembled to study the feasibility of building a supersonic airliner. They went to work and in 1959 they came up with 2 design studies for supersonic airliners. However, there was a huge problem with this aircraft; it was going to be extremely costly so France and Britain decided to go in it together. They signed a treaty stated that both France and Britain had equal shares in this airliner and that they would equally split the costs as well as the production and profits from future sales. In September of 1965, they began work on the production airframe. A final prototype was finished in 1966. The next year the prototype was presented in Toulouse, France. But in 1968 nor the British or the French were the first to fly a supersonic aircraft, the USSR bet them to it. Finally, on March 2, 1969 after many changes and redesigns The French Concorde 001 made her maiden flight and on April 9, 1969 the 002 in England made hers. The Concorde can reach speeds of Mach 2. She is 203 feet long and has the ability to hold 100 passengers. Her cruising altitude is 50,000-60,000 feet. Her take off speed is 223 miles per hour and her landing speed is 186 miles per hour.
