Mynarski Lancaster Article:

The most famous Allied bomber that was involved with World War II is the Avro Lancaster hands down. This incredible aircraft was equipped with very impressive flying characteristics and operational performance. The Lancaster was the RAF’s only heavy bomber that could carry a 12,000 pound Tallboy and a 22,000 pound Grand Slam bombs. This infamous aircraft name to fame took place in May of 1943 with its daring and precise raids on the Ruhr dams and again in 1944 when it sank the German battleship Tirpitz. This giant aircraft delivered 608,612 tons of bombs in 156,000 sorties during World War II. Even though the Lancaster was used mostly as a night bomber it also excelled in daylight precision bombing and gained worldwide recognition as the “Dam Buster” after it was used in 1943 raids on Germany’s Ruhr Valley dams.

There were 7300 Avro Lancaster’s that rolled off the assembly lines in Britain and Canada. There are only 2 Lancaster’s on display to this day. One of them being at the Nanton Lancaster Society Air Museum and the other is at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. They only offer guided tours by appointment only to the Mynarski Lancaster. The Mynarski Lancaster is a plan old AVRO Lancaster that was given this name in honor of a heroic young pilot Andrew Mynarski. On the night of June 13 1944 his Lancaster X was shot down by Luftwaffe night fighter. As the bomber started to plummet to the ground, Andrew with his clothes on fire, tied intensely to free his rear gunner who was trapped from the jammed rear turret. Unbelievable, the gunner survived to tell his story but Andrew later died from his server burns.

This wonderful bomber is 69 feet and 5 inches long, and stands 19 feet and 7 inches tall, with a wingspan of 102 feet. Its empty weight was 36,828 pounds and its load weight was 63,000 pounds. Its max speed was 280 miles per hour with a range of 2,700 miles with the capability of going 3,000 miles with a minimal bomb load. Its service ceiling was 23,500 feet. The Lancaster came equipped with 8x 0.303 inch Browning machine gun in three turrets and a max of 22,000 pounds of bombs, but normally carried 14,000 pounds of bombs.
