B-52 Stratofortress Airplane Article: The B-52 Stratofortress is a long-range, subsonic, jet-powered, strategic bomber that is solely owned and operated but the United States Air Force. This incredible aircraft has been in service since 1955 and is still continually used today. The B-25 made her first flight on April 15, 1952 and hasn’t looked back since. The main function for this aircraft was to carry nuclear weapons during the Cold War-ear deterrence mission. Even though the B-52 has been used in several wars, she has only dropped conventional munitions in actual combat. One of her biggest assets to the USAF is that she has the longest unrefueled range of any bomber, and she can carry up to 70,000 pounds of weapons. In January of 2005 the B-52 Stratofortress became the second aircraft to mark the 50 years of continuous service with it’s originally operator. The first aircraft that has done this is the English Electric Canberra. The other two that have made the list are the C-130 Hercules and the Tupolev Tu-95. Even though the B-52 is still being used today, there have been some models that have already been retired. The B-52D retired in 1982 the B-52G retired in 1994 and the B-52H which is currently being used isn’t set to retire until at least 2020. The great aircraft is 160.92 feet long, 40.67 feet tall, with a wingspan of 185 feet. Her empty weight is 195,000 pounds her max take off weight is 488,000 pounds and her max payload is 70,000 pounds. She can reach speeds of 595 miles per hour at altitude and 405 miles per hour at sea level and she usually cruises at 515 miles per hour.
