B-25 Mitchell Airplane Article:

The B-25 Mitchell was an American twin engine medium sized bomber made by North American Aviation. It was named after the great General Billy Mitchell, a great pioneer of the U.S. military aviation. The B-25 is the only American military craft named after a real person. The B-25 Mitchell was frequently used by Allied air forces in every theater of World War II. The B-25 also saw use in many other air forces after the war was over and was in service for four decades. When production came to a halt nearly 10,000 B-25’s had rolled off the assembly line.

The B-25’s first claim to fame was when she was used in April 1942 in the Doolittle Raid. 16 B-25’s led by Lt. Col Jimmy Doolittle, took of from the carrier the USS Hornet and successfully bombed Tokyo as well as four other Japanese cities without one single loss.

Unfortunately not all B-25 stories have happy endings. 15 B-25’s crashed landed in route to a recovery field in Eastern China. The crashes were due to the stormy weather, fuel exhaustion and zero visibility. Only one landed intact in the Soviet Union. The crew was interned and the aircraft was confiscated. Thankfully, 71 of the 80 aircrew survived their missions and made it back to America in one piece.

This great airplane was 17 feet 7 inches tall, 52 feet 11 inches long, with a wingspan of 57 feet 6 inches. Her empty weight was 21, 12 pounds and her max takeoff weight was 41,800 pounds. Her max speed was 275 miles per hour with a service ceiling of 25,000 feet and a rate of climb of 790 feet per minute. Her Armament consisted of 12x .50 in (12.7 mm) machine guns, 3,000 pound rocket bombs plus eight 5 inch high velocity aircraft rockets (HVAR) and 6,000 pounds of bombs.
