BF-109 Messerschmitt Airplane History: Willy Messerschmitt designed the Messerschmitt Bf 109 in the early 1930’s and the aircraft was manufactured by his company Bayerische Flugzegwereke Messerschmitt. The BF 109 was the first true modern fighter of her time, which had such unique features as an all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy, and retraceable landing gear, all which were not typically common on aircrafts of that time. She saw her first flight on May 28, 1935 and she was introduced to the world in 1937 when she was delivered to the Luftwaffe. The BF 109 holds the record for being the most produced fighter in history. A total of 33,984 units were manufactured up until April of 1945, when production stopped. The BF 109 was the backbone of the Luftwaffe fighter force during World War II. However, she was being phased out starting in 1941 to be replaced by the Focke-Wulf Fw 190. Even though she got replaced sooner than she liked, the Bf 109 holds the record for being the most successful fighter of World War II, with being credited with shooing down more aircraft than any of her contemporaries. The BF 109 was 29 feet 7 inches long and stood 8 feet 2 inches tall, with a wingspan of 32 feet 6 inches. Her empty weight was 5,893 pounds and her loaded weight was 6,940 pounds. Her max speed was 398 miles per hour and her cruise speed was 365 miles per hour and she had a range of 528 miles. Resources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messerschmitt_Bf_109
