About the Tristar L-1011 Airplane: The Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, commonly referred to as just L-1011 was the third wide body passenger jet airliner to enter operation, following the Boeing 747 and the McDonnell Douglas DC-10. Between 1968 and 1984, Lockheed manufactured a total of 250 TriStars. This L-1011 Tristar, Delta Airlines wooden model replica has been hand-painted and handcrafted in kiln dried Philippine Mahogany. L-1011 TriStar Delta Air Lines Airplane History: The Lockhead L-1011 TriStar, which is commonly called L-1011, was the third wide-body passenger airliner to enter operation after the Boeing 747 and McDonnell Douglas DC-10. Just like the DC-10 the TriStar was a three engine jet airliner. Lockheed produced the Tristar from 1968 through 1984, with a total of 250 of them been built. Ironically, Lockheed decided to get out of the commercial aircraft business after production ended with the TriStar because it had low sales. The Tristar was flown by many commercial airliners but Delta Air Lines was the TriStars’s largest customer. Delta kept the TriStar in their fleet for many many years, but in 2001 they had to retire their TriStar fleet. The only other air liner that was still using the TriStar in 2008 was ATA Airlines, but they shut down in April of this year. The L-1011 TriStar was 177 feet 8 inches long and stood 55 feet 4 inches tall, with a wingspan if 155 feet 4 inches. Her empty weight was 224,579 pounds and her max take off weight was 430,000 pounds. Her max speed was Mach 0.90 and her cruising speed is Mach 0.86. Her crew consisted of three people and she could hold up 253 in 3 classes.
